25"Church Week in Kamigoto" Church Concerts
Islands filled with the history of the hardships and sufferings of the hidden Christians (link - UNESCO World Heritage). The church buildings lit up with glowing lights, the music of the orchestra echoing throughout the sanctuary, and the voices of the choir - enjoy the early Christmas of Kamigoto over six nights of classical music played by professional musicians. The illuminations are lit from early December to early January. -

The Rose Festival
The roses of Huis Ten Bosch, praised by the world's top-level breeders and experts, are in full bloom at this festival. 1,000 varieties of rose have been gathered from all over the world, and over 1 million blooms welcome you to this special event. The magical Night Rose Garden lit up with splendid light-work is an absolute must-see; it presents a completely different view of the roses from the daytime hours. *Due to the weather and unforeseeable natural circumstances, the blooming season of the flowers may be earlier or later than expected. Doya Tanada (Rice Terrace) Festival
A magical scene emerges from Doya Tanada's rice terraces, as some 2,600 lanterns, set on the ridges between the rice fields, are lit up. It is so magical that time seems to stop for a moment; the sun sets on the ocean just beyond the terraces, creating a beam of reflection and painting the entire field of vision into a world of nothing but gold and orange. -

Goto Camellia Festival
Goto is well-known as a natural habitat for camellias, and the people of the islands have a long history of integrating this flower into their lives. The Goto Camellia Festival allows visitors to experience winter on the islands with the camellia in full bloom. Food vendors and souvenir shops will be available at the Goto Umakamon-Ichi Market during the opening of the festival. Viewing tours venturing into the natural camellia forests will be held as well. -
29Memorial to the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan
This is the site of the martyrdom of the 26 Catholics who were executed here on February 5th, 1597, under the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This was the first place in Japan where people were executed for Christianity by order of a national leader. The 26 believers including Spaniards, Italians and Japanese were arrested in places as far away as Kyoto, forced to walk all the way to Nagasaki and crucified at Nishizaka Hill. Nagasaki was chosen as the place for execution to set an example, since it was a city with many churches and Christians, and where ships from Portugal often docked.The event is referred to as the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan.The martyrs were later beatified in 1627, and canonized by the Pope in 1862. -

The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum
The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum covers the history of this event in the accessible form of a story. It begins with the disastrous scene of the attack and includes the events leading up to the dropping of the atomic bomb, the reconstruction of Nagasaki up to the present day, the history of nuclear weapons development, and the hope for a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons. -

Nagasaki Port and Nagasaki Seaside Park/ Nagasaki Mizubenomori
Take a breather at Nagasaki Seaside Park, located in between Matsugae International Terminal, where the international cruise ships call, and the Dejima Wharf restaurant area. This is a peaceful place where you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze and fine canals. Located conveniently close to the downtown area, locals love to come here for walking, running, dog-walking, picnics, yoga and flying Nagasaki’s unique kites. When the international cruise ships cast off for their next destination, locals line up at this park after work to wave off the ship and say “see you again in Nagasaki” to their overseas guests. -

Oura Cathedral
Oura Cathedral is the oldest wooden church of gothic architecture existing in Japan. It was built in 1864 by a French missionary, and was thus known by the people of Nagasaki at the time as the “French Temple”. This church was dedicated to the 26 martyrs who had been killed at Nishizaka Hill, and bronze statues in Oura Cathedral and at Nishizaka were built to face each other. This church has been designated as a national treasure. One important story of this church is the “Discovery of the Flock”. In March 1865, hidden Christians from Urakami came to the cathedral and told the priest, Father Petitjean, that they were of the same faith as he was. When the Pope at the time heard the story of the Christian faith that had survived many years of harsh persecution, he was greatly moved and declared it to be the “Miracle in the East”. Pope John Paul II visited this site in 1981. This church was replaced with Urakami Cathderal as the Cathedral of the Nagasaki Archdiocese. -

Old Samurai Warriors’ Houses
On the west side of Shimabara Castle, the samurai residences have been carefully preserved, complete with clear spring water flowing in canals down the center of the streets. -

Omura Sumitada Historical Park
Omura Sumitada was Japan’s first Christian Daimyo (Samurai war lord), who with foresight and vision sent a group of young Japanese emissaries to Rome (known as the “Tensho Embassy”).This park was built at the residence where Omura Sunitada breathed his last breath. A garden with a fountain and its clean flow of water still remains as the core attraction of the park. Visitors can learn some historical facts about Sumitada including details of local Japanese Christians and trading with the West. -

Omura Park
Omura Park was built over the outer moat of the former Kushima Castle. The park is filled with 300 blossoming cherry trees in spring and has been selected as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots”. Omura Sakura is said to be the most graceful cherry blossom with 60 to 100 petals per flower, while the ordinal cherry blossom has 5 petals. At the beginning of summer, some 300,000 irises bloom in the park. -

Mt. Onidake
