Hamagurihama Beach
One of the top 100 beaches in Japan, Hamagurihama is one of Shinkamigoto’s most popular beaches. At low tide, the receded shoreline leaves behind a wide expanse of soft sand and shallow puddles. The event “Let’s play at Hamagurihama Day” is held here every year near Marine Day, drawing a crowd from both the various islands and other parts of Japan. Amenities in the area include a beach house and shower stalls. -

Ryoma Park & Ryoma Memorial
Sakamoto Ryoma’s companions met with a shipwreck at Shioyazaki on Nakadori Island. A wounded Ryoma, recovering from the Teradaya Incident, made his way to the island and commissioned for a memorial to be built at this spot. A statue of Ryoma with his hands pressed together in prayer now stands here, facing Shioyazaki. -

Nakanoura Church
A humble wooden church situated by a small cove, Nakanoura Church is famed for the picturesque view it creates when reflected on the calm waters on a clear day. The Catholics in this area are descended from Hidden Christians of Kurosaki Village in Sotome who moved here in the late 18th century to escape persecution. However, in the mid-19th century, in what is known as “Goto kuzure” (the fall of Goto), residents in this area suffered one of the most intense spate of persecutions. After the ban on Christianity was finally lifted, Christians in this area set out to build “the most beautiful church in Goto”, and in 1925, they completed the church. -
